Self-sustaining vortex perturbations in smooth shear flows

چکیده
The nonlinear dynamics of coherent circular/elliptical cyclonic and anticyclonic vortices in plane flow with constant shear is investigated numerically using a dealiased Fourier pseudospectral code. The flow is asymptotically linearly stable, but is highly non-normal, allowing perturbations to gain energy transiently from the background shear flow. This linear transient growth interplays with nonlinear processes. In certain cases it is shown that the nonlinear feedback is positive, leading to self-sustaining coherent vortices. Self-sustaining coherent vortices exist where the vorticity is parallel to the mean flow vorticity !cyclonic rotation". The required nonlinear feedback is absent for small amplitude anticyclonic vortices. However, elliptical anticyclonic vortices become self-sustaining if the amplitude exceeds a threshold value. The self-sustaining of coherent vortices is similar to the subcritical, so-called bypass, transition to turbulence in shear flows. The common features are: transient linear growth; positive nonlinear feedback; and anisotropy of the linear and nonlinear phenomena !in contrast to isotropic Kolmogorov turbulence". A plasma laboratory experiment is suggested based on the results of this investigation. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. #DOI: 10.1063/1.2209229$

Linear coupling and over-reflection phenomena of magnetohydrodynamic waves in smooth shear flows
Abstract Special features of magnetohydrodynamic waves linear dynamics in smooth shear flows are studied. Quantitative asymptotic and numerical analysis are performed for wide range of system parameters when basic flow has constant shear of velocity and uniform magnetic field is parallel to the basic flow. The special features consist of magnetohydrodynamic wave mutual transformation and over-r...

M. Akhalkatsi Physics Department, Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi 0179, Georgia (Dated: October 2004) Abstract The linear dynamics of acoustic waves and vortices in uniform shear flow is studied. For flows with very low shear rates, the dynamics of perturbations is adiabatic and can be described by the WKB approximation. However, for flows with moderate and high shear rates the WKB approximat...
متن کاملVorticity Budget of Weak Thermal Convection in Keplerian Disks
By employing the equations of mean-square vorticity (enstrophy) fluctuations in strong shear flows, we demonstrate that unlike energy production of turbulent vorticity in non-rotating shear flows, the turbulent vorticity of weak convection in Keplerian disks cannot gain energy from vortex stretching/tilting by background shear unless the associated Reynolds stresses are negative. This is becaus...
متن کاملSurface gravity waves in deep fluid at vertical shear flows
Special features of surface gravity waves in deep fluid flow with constant vertical shear of velocity is studied. It is found that the mean flow velocity shear leads to non-trivial modification of surface gravity wave modes dispersive characteristics. Moreover, the shear induces generation of surface gravity waves by internal vortex mode perturbations. The performed analytical and numerical stu...
متن کاملOn the role of vortex stretching in energy optimal growth of three-dimensional perturbations on plane parallel shear flows
The three-dimensional linearized optimal energy growth mechanism, in plane parallel shear flows, is re-examined in terms of the role of vortex stretching and the interplay between the spanwise vorticity and the planar divergent components. For high Reynolds numbers the structure of the optimal perturbations in Couette, Poiseuille and mixing-layer shear profiles is robust and resembles localized...
